Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hello@openicu.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes! Any clinician regardless of discipline with an interest in ICU research can be involved.  We want to focus our efforts on practicing clinicians that are currently working in ICU; therefore at this moment in time we are not open to those working in adjacent specialties or students.

Please look out for opportunities to be involved. We will shortly be looking for members to join our first committee.

This is designed to improve opportunities and access to those that might not otherwise know who to approach. Any interested clinician can submit a project that they are interested in having completed and interested novice clinicians can submit an EOI to help with one of these projects. We will then send all EOIs to the supervisory clinician for them to make a decision about who they would like to be involved.

The ultimate decision will be that of the supervisory clinician and depending on ethical or governance principles may be someone who works locally; however we ask clinicians when choosing someone to help that they consider our goal around providing opportunity for all regardless of location.

Following introductions OPEN ICU will have no ongoing responsibility for either party, research conducted; or any ethical or governance requirements required.

A supervisor should have appropriate experience in researcher.

Please click here. We will review all ideas, and any type of project will be considered. If we are not actively looking for a project then we will be in contact with you next time we are, to see if this is still something you want to pursue.

If multiple projects are submitted then the committee will score each proposal out of 10 and any ties will be resolved by a vote on anonymised proposals.

Key considerations are around:

Relevance to critical care

  • An identified knowledge gap or research priority?
  • Is a key research question identified?

Methodology

  • Are the outcomes well defined and appropriate to the question identified?
  • Are the proposed inclusion and exclusion criteria and methods to identify patients appropriate?
  • Is the data collection burden appropriate?

Feasibility

  • How likely is it that the project will be completed?
  • Are the outcomes / data easily measurable/ collectable?
  • Are there any anticipated pitfalls that might be hard to mitigate?

Requests for secondary papers will need to be made to the committee. Please email hello@openicu.com.au to discuss requests.

A corporate/collaborative authorship model will be used with “on behalf of the OPEN-ICU Network” being how all collaborators are acknowledged. It is the expectation that all collaborators will be listed as PubMed citable although this will be dependent on the journal the project is submitted for publication in. All named authors / collaborators will need to meet ICMJE criteria for authorship. Specific authorship policies relating to named authors will be detailed in the protocol of each project, and these criteria apply to all roles (including members of the committee and sub-committee)

All members shall act in a collaborative and professional manner, remembering that members may have never participated in multi-site research before when supporting more junior researchers. We want to provide a positive early experience of ICU research.

Additionally, all members shall adhere to all relevant local and national ethical and research governance principles when conducting any research relating to OPEN-ICU. This includes the most recent National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research.
